Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care system that has been helping people for over a hundred years, by gently removing pressure and/or irritation from the delicate spinal nerves and joints and restoring optimal spinal function and alignment.

When a joint is misaligned or "stuck" and not moving as it should it can cause anything from no pain to mild or even severe pain and muscle spasms. At worst it may cause irritation to the extremely sensitive nerves leaving the spine, causing pain and problems anywhere in the body, for example sciatica or arm pain.

Chiropractors spend at least four years of full-time university study to become trained to detect and remove these joint restrictions and irritations in the spine. In the UK Chiropractic is a registered health profession under strict supervision of the General Chiropractic Council.

Your first consultation will take about 45 minutes. The Chiropractor will take a full history and complete an orthopaedic and neurological examination. They will then explain to you the findings of the examination and a proposed treatment plan.

Chiropractic is suitable for everyone, including new-born babies, the elderly, pregnant women and sports enthusiasts. Read more about Chiropractic on the FAQ page.

massageRemedial Massage

The prime purpose of massage is to alleviate the stress and tension that can build up in the body's soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments).

What is Remedial Massage?
It's a system of manipulation of the soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. Soft tissue responds to touch and remedial massage uses techniques designed to treat both deep and superficial tissues, not dissimilar to those used in sports massage. The Remedial Massage Therapist uses skills and manipulation combined with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology to bring about pain relief, correcting and normalising the body's muscle and soft tissues.

What does it treat?
It can be used as an injury preventative technique as well as a treatment for injury. Massage works on many different levels and it is a unique way in which combines the various benefits to suit the individual which makes it such a versatile and effective treatment method.

Muscles not only move our joints, they stabilise them, and they provide armour for the internal organs, minor problems with these functions cause more pain than most people realise. Headaches can originate in the neck and head muscles. Trigger points in the abdominal and pelvic muscles can cause abdominal and pelvic pain. Low back pain and sciatic pain can originate in the different muscle groups.

What are the benefits?
It produces both physical and psychological benefits. Benefits include improved circulation, reduced soft tissue swelling (where present ), the breakdown of scar tissue after injury, reduced muscle tension and a general feeling of well being.

Indian Head MassageIndian Head Massage

Indian head massage is based on the ayurvedic system of healing which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. It provides Indian families with relaxation and healing on a daily basis, as well as playing a part in rituals such as weddings and births .

How does it work?
The aim of Indian head massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders.

What does it involve?
The client sits in a comfortable chair for the treatment. The therapist uses a range of different movements including application of deep kneading and compression movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas. In addition, the therapist will also gently stimulate and stroke pressure points on the face. The session will usually last about forty-five minutes, and most therapists like their clients to sit quietly for a few minutes once the massage has been completed.

What is it good for?
Indian head massage is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraine and sinusitis. Clients report that the experience is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving them feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate.

What are the benefits?
Indian head massage helps increase joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders, improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, frees knots of muscular tension, relaxes connective tissue, and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products. It is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress and tension.

What are the side effects and when should it be avoided?
Following a treatment some clients experience tiredness, dizziness, an increased desire to urinate (as the body eliminates toxins and waste materials) or aching muscles. All of these side effects usually last for no more than a few hours, after which clients generally experience increased energy and alertness.

Indian head massage should be avoided if:
You have had recent surgery, or a head or neck injury; a history of thrombosis or embolism; spondylitis or spondylosis. If you have high or low blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, any kind of heart condition, cancer or osteoporosis, talk to your doctor before arranging a treatment. Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least five hours before the treatment.
